These studies came from my work with Olympic and world champion swimmer Cate Campbell. She was standing on rocks on a steep bluff, and I got her to do stretches in one of our sessions together. I had no preconceived ideas in mind, and while perched upon the rocks, Cate made this shape with her arms that resembled a bird's wing. And I couldn't get it out of my head that she resembled a bird, stretching its wing. As she extended her arm and looked back in the opposite direction, there was a foreboding sense of anticipation that shortly she was going to be rumbling with something in the water. And the idea of the Winged Victory came to mind, complete with a fierce and daunting storm. So, I started to develop this idea that Cate wasn't only swimming against an adversary; she was swimming for something much more significant. And that idea, then linked to super-heroes, classical gods/goddesses, Olympians, nationalism, and a whole raft of concepts relating to a human, being confronted by forces greater than themselves and overcoming them. And this made me think about courage, about surmounting one's fears.
